Iaido: The Art of Japanese Swordsmanship
Iaido (pronounced: eee-eye-doe) is a method of wielding the sword, one of the Martial Art forms of the Japanese people. It comes from the "bushi" or the "samurai" of feudal Japan. The i in iaidõ refers both to the existence of body and that of spirit and the ai refers to adaptability, the impromptu execution of movements whenever and wherever a correct response is called for. Dõ means "The Way", the way of the sword.
The practice of this Martial Art develops a solemn spirit, extreme concentration and skill. Every motion will correspond to the offensive motions of the opponent. Additionally the Iaido-ka develops the habit of following the rules of discipline to enhance ones life. Iaido students will further learn balance, grace, control of both the body & mind and develop a keen awareness for the environment. Your instructor for this program is Mr. Ortega who is a direct student of Saikou-Shihan Nishiuchi. Shihan Nishiuchi holds a certified Chuden degree in Musojikiden Hasegawa Eishin Ryu Iai-heiho from the ninteenth successor Sawada Sensei. He is also the founder of our current system, Toei Ryu Iai- Batto and is guest instructor from time to time.
